Words of a Feather can Bring us Together

While the fruits of the Spirit are useful in any season of life, I feel they have become especially relevant in these days. While we have previously addressed love and joy, I’d like to spend a few moments on gentleness.

The past two months have brought many changes that have created new schedules and rhythms for many of us. Perhaps your work life looks a lot differently than it did just a few months ago, or you have been spending a lot of time at home with your family. With these changes, stress and frustrations may have been simmering below the surface – or become fully exposed.

Moreover, the concerns of our world can incite differing opinions among colleagues, friends, neighbors, or even family. However, even in the midst of disagreement, gentleness is a blessed choice. Is this always easy? No, especially when emotions are running high.

While we do not have to agree, we have the opportunity to opt for a response of loving kindness. Rather than letting weighty words form a brick wall in a conversation, we can let the words of our mouth elevate with a featherweight grace.

Proverbs 15:4 declares, “The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.”

Our words, whether written or spoken, can become life-giving or soul-crushing – but we get to choose. I’ve witnessed how a harsh interaction can move through a room with a domino effect. Contrarily, a pleasant encounter or a warm word can brighten up an environment in an instant.

In truth, I recognize my own deficiencies in the exhibition of gentleness. While I’ve made deliberate progress at times, I am far from superlative. But, I know that through prayer and practice, I can progress in my pursuit of tenderness and I would love to have you along for the journey.
