A heart for service

We’ve been through a season in the last 18 months, haven’t we? As we try to reconcile the hardships, difficulties, and divisions of the past year-plus, all while adapting to the new normal, there is one thing for sure – so much of what happens in our world is truly beyond our individual control.

These are challenging times in which suffering and strife are a reality for many. And honestly, when I look around at all that is troubling in the world, I can feel really overwhelmed.

I want to help the hurting and resolve the conflict. I want to do all the things, and yet, where does one begin?

Most importantly, we can start by turning to God in prayer every time we see or hear of a situation that we truly cannot fix on our own. Because, God is really good at being the creator, and He is really good at listening to us.

I am also committed to not sitting idly by. I know there are many ways we can serve others through placing our feet on the ground locally, providing encouragement when possible, and even offering financial support – however large or small – to distant efforts.

Friends, please hear me when I say – I do not endorse over-commitment. Margin is absolutely essential in a fast-paced world. But, even in our busiest seasons, we can commit to doing one thing to improve the life of someone around us.

When we serve others, we have the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus. 1 Peter 4:8-10 (NIV) states, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

On this very day, we can begin looking for ways to use our God-given gifts to love others.

Perhaps, right now, you are able to give your time to serve a soup kitchen or nearby food pantry. Or, maybe you can volunteer your time to assist teachers at your child’s school, help rebuild a local home in need, plant a community garden, or provide the service of driving someone to a doctor’s appointment.

Maybe this is the busiest season of your life yet as you balance work, family and all the things, and you few minutes to spare in a week. I promise you, I understand. Could you take this time to write a note of encouragement or thanks to a friend or someone serving in your community?

It would be my prayer, that if each of us devoted even 5 minutes each week to serve, support, lift up, or love on others, that we could create a ripple effect throughout our communities…or maybe even beyond.

Let’s develop a heart that yearns to serve. Where can you start today?
